MR Enterography of Pediatric Inflammatory Bowel Disease: Review of Imaging Techniques and Findings

نویسنده

چکیده

Introduction Inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) consists of ulcerative colitis (UC), Crohn disease (CD), and indeterminate colitis. While sharing many clinical features, ulcerative colitis and Crohn disease are considered separate entities with unique characteristics. Due to the chronic nature of these diseases, frequent and repeated imaging is often necessary for diagnosis and therapeutic planning. Magnetic resonance enterography (MRE) has emerged as a robust imaging modality for the evaluation of IBD, offering many advantages over conventional imaging techniques while sparing the patient exposure to ionizing radiation. This review will briefly discuss the pathology and epidemiology of IBD, provide a practical guide to the performance of MRE, and highlight various classic imaging findings frequently encountered in these patients.

Small bowel MR enterography: problem solving in Crohn’s disease

Magnetic resonance enterography (MRE) is fast becoming the first-line radiological investigation to evaluate the small bowel in patients with Crohn's disease. It can demonstrate both mural and extramural complications. The lack of ionizing radiation, together with high-contrast resolution, multiplanar capability and cine-imaging make it an attractive imaging modality in such patients who need p...

Inflammatory bowel disease—the role of cross-sectional imaging techniques in the investigation of the small bowel

BACKGROUND The diagnosis of inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) in children and adolescents is based on the integration of clinical, biological, endoscopic, histological and radiological data. METHODS The most important part of the diagnosis is the histology, which is acquired by endoscopy. Imaging of the small bowel has changed in recent years, but the imaging goals are primarily to determine t...

New Imaging Techniques in the Diagnosis of Inflammatory Bowel Diseases

BACKGROUND Cross-sectional imaging modalities are fundamental in the management of patients with inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) from the first diagnosis and throughout the entire course of the disease. Over the past few years, the use of magnetic resonance (MR) imaging (MRI) has considerably increased, and no other imaging modality has experienced as advanced a development as MRI. METHODS A...

MR imaging of the small bowel – technique and current applications

Increased importance has been placed on evaluating small bowel disease to guide management in often chronic conditions such as Crohn’s disease. Imaging of the small bowel has always played a key role in diagnosis and decision making. Traditionally, fluoroscopic studies such as barium follow through and small bowel enteroclysis have been used. More recently, the gold standard of evaluating the s...

MR enterography imaging of Crohn’s disease in pediatric patients

BACKGROUND Crohn disease (CD) is a chronic inflammatory process of gastrointestinal tract, which frequently affects children. Recent advances in Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) technique have made small bowel imaging possible, what is extremely useful in pediatrics. The purpose of this article is to describe the characteristic MR enterography findings and to present the advantages of this moda...
